Expedia is an Internet-based travel agency and a part of Expedia, Inc. which is based out of the United States of America with localized sites for 15 countries. It books airline tickets, hotel reservations, car rentals, cruises, vacation packages, and various attractions and services via the World Wide Web and telephone travel agents.

Expedia.co.uk uses multiple global distribution systems like Amadeus or the Sabre reservation systems for flights and for hotels, Worldspan, and Pegasus along with their own hotel reservation system for their contracted bulk rate reservations which is shared with other Expedia, Inc. sites. In 2006, Expedia.com was awarded a Webby Award in the area of "Best In Travel Websites" and a Stevie Award from the American Business Association for "Most Innovative Company"

Expedia.co.uk was started by Microsoft, which they then spun as a multi-billion dollar company because it was no longer about software intensive technology and they were concerned that they would not do their best at this.

Hotels.com is an operating company of Expedia, Inc. which provides reservation services for hotel rooms and other places to stay.

The company was founded in Dallas in 1991 as Hotel Reservations Network (HRN) by Dave Litman and Bob Diener as a toll-free telephone service, offering consumers a one-stop source for discounted hotel rooms in major cities. In 2002 HRN introduced Hotels.com and the brand 1-800-2-Hotels.

TripAdvisor was founded in February 2000, and was purchased by InterActive Corporation in 2004. Original financing was obtained from Flagship Ventures, the Bollard Group, and private investors. IAC spun off its travel group of businesses under the Expedia, Inc. name in August 2005.
