Commuters and travelers alike use the train system in the UK. In Britain, international travelers can purchase a pass called a BritRail pass that allows them so many days of travel in a given time period. Train travel is extremely popular in the UK. The British Railway System has over 21,000 miles of track and is known as the oldest railway system in the world. Once a nationalized system known as British Railways, or British Rail, the UK's trains are now privatized.

Begun in the 19th century, trains were a pivotal form of moving people and cargo during the industrialization of Great Britain. Originally trains were run off steam power, and many off us still think of trains as the old-fashioned steam trains puffing along but as we progress in the new millennium electric trains as fast being developed and used in the UK.

The train stations in the UK are often beautiful examples of Victorian architecture, just check out Kings Cross Station in London, and many of the old stations are still in use today. Often originally located on the edges of town centers, and in major business centers, train stations proliferate the UK, making travel to almost anywhere very convenient.

London, as the center of the UK, has many busy train stations. Nine major stations are in London each serve different areas in the UK. Here are a few of the major stations: Paddington Station, Kings Cross Station, Euston Station, Victoria Station, and Waterloo Station. Some stations have high speed train service, or have quick trains to Heathrow Airport.

The Chunnel, or Channel Tunnel, is an underground rail tunnel that links Britain and France. It is 31.4 miles long and runs under the English Channel at the Strait of Dover. It connects Folkestone, Kent in the UK to Coquelles, France, which is near Calais in Northern France. The Eurostar train runs on the Channel tunnel back and forth between countries.
